http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/thatsreallyweek/59993/nov-30-dec-6-grammy-whammiesrunner-up-rebounds/ But one diva who was somewhat surprisingly shut out was onetime Grammy sweetheart Whitney Houston . The Grammy committee usually loves comeback stories. Whether it's artists who left the spotlight for a while and then returned with a vengeance ( Bonnie Raitt , Natalie Cole , Tina Turner ), veterans who reinvented their careers by collaborating with other musicians ( Carlos Santana , Herbie Hancock , Robert Plant ), or artists who struggled with their demons and made great music as a result ( Dixie Chicks , Amy Winehouse ), such rising-from-ashes back stories usually strongly resonate with industry voters. In this regard, Whitney Houston's "comeback" album I Look To You --released after the singer's long hiatus, divorce from Bobby Brown , and infamous battles with drugs--seemed a shoo-in for multiple nominations. Her record label Arista seemed so sure of Whitney's chances, in fact, that it moved her album release date up in order for it to qualify for this year's voting window. But Whitney was actually completely shut out, with NO nominations whatsoever--not only was she snubbed in the major categories like Album Of The Year, but even in the secondary Pop and R&B categories. This was a shock considering her Grammy history of 24 nominations and six wins, including winning Album Of The Year and Record Of The Year in 1994. Many industry people and fans alike are wondering why Whitney was overlooked this time. Some say it might have been all the hype. From the moment it was announced that Whitney would be releasing her first original studio album in seven years, the Arista promo machine went into overdrive--with Whitney hosting a star-studded listening party with her longtime mentor, Arista honcho Clive Davis (at which Clive reminded everyone of Whitney's millions and millions of albums sold), and doing a headline-garnering Oprah interview about her struggles. And it seemed many were rooting for her, with I Look To You debuting at #1 with more than 300,000 units sold in its first week (it has sold about 800,000 as of this writing), but the hype was still a little overwhelming. But then there was Whitney's series of disappointing, poorly received performances on Good Morning America , The X Factor , and Dancing With The Stars, on which her now-hoarse voice was a mere shadow of its former glory, and many started to doubt that this was much of a comeback at all. Perhaps the Grammy voters doubted it as well. Guess Whitney will just have to settle for the lifetime-achievement "International Artist" trophy she picked up at last month's American Music Awards. The other big surprise snub of the 52nd Grammys was Kanye West 's shutout in all of the major categories. While he did receive seven nominations, they were all in the Rap category, while his previous three albums ( The College Dropout , Late Registration , and Graduation ) had all been up for Album Of The Year. His latest, 808s & Heartbreak , despite being a huge hit that garnered much critical praise (and certainly had a weepy comeback story behind it, since much of it was inspired by Kanye's mother's death), did not get an Album Of The Year nod. Additionally, its biggest track, "Heartless" (which was even popularly covered by both Kris Allen and the Fray ), received no nominations at all. There are many industry theories surrounding this snub as well, but of course the biggest one is that his bumrushing of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at this year'sMTV Video Music Awards generated a massive amount of ill will among Grammy voters. Now the bright side for Taylor is, when she inevitably accepts some of her possible eight Grammys at next month's ceremony, she won't have to worry about Kanye interrupting her . There's a good chance he won't even be there.

I don't think so, then again I've only heard a few cuts from her cd, and I wasn't impressed. Her public appearances haven't been that good either. I think Clive may have put her out too soon because her voice just isn't strong anymore.

I told you all from the beginning this industry isnt that forgiving. Whitney will never get back on top mark my words. Its ashame but then again we all make choices and she made her's using drugs.

Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Natalie Cole sound good during live performances as well as on their musical recordings.I can't speak about Whitney's singing during her recent live performances because I haven't heard her singing recently outside of the songs that are played from her recent album. But if the negative reviews about her live performances are true, the Grammys may not want to give an award to someone's whose vocals may (possibly) have been altered on her CD by digital equipment to make her vocals sound better and stronger than they actually are.Whatever the case may be, Whitney doesn't NEED another Grammy. I'm saying that in admiration of the lady and the artist. Whitney is a musical icon who has achieved many awards and achievements already. Unlike Whitney, there are people who have won Grammys and they were not musically relevant or will not be musically relevant 20 years later. Kanye West is another story. People have said that he behaves the way that he does because of his mother's death. I sympathize with him for the loss of his mother. However, Kanye was behaving like a pompous egotistical jerk when his mother was alive. In an interview, his mother explained that she raised him to be confident. No disrespect to his mother, but Kanye's behavior is not "confidence", it's arrogance. Kanye's behavior at the VMA awards with Taylor Swift was only the last straw after a series of other incidents at awards shows. Before and after his mother's death, Kanye has jumped on stage and interrupted winners when he felt that he was snubbed for an award. At one VMA awards show years ago, he became angry and jumped up on stage when his video (where he was acting like an Evil Kinevil character) did not win. He said "I put a lot of work and money into the making of that video".There have been times when he DID win awards and in his acceptance speech he wouldcriticize the people who voted for him by saying that another artist in particular deserved to win the award in that category besides him. One incident, backstage atthe American Music Awards or Grammy Awards (I can't recall which one) he told a male rock group (I don't recall their name) that they deserved the award instead of him, and he gave the trophy to them.Excluding the Taylor Swift incident, I've only mentioned two out of many incidents where Kanye has made outbursts at awards shows. The industry probably views Kanye in the "damned if we do, damned if we don't category". Kanye will get angry if you: 1) Don't give him an award; 2) If you DO give him an award; and 3) If you give an award to someone else instead of another artist in the same music category. Kanye wasn't nominated in the same category as Taylor and Beyonce and he still made it a point to be outspoken and interrupt that moment. Kanye is a great artist but he is also emotionally unstable. The Grammys have awarded people who they knew were emotionally stable, but at least those artists were appreciative of their win and they did not disrupt the awards ceremony.

Sugamomma1624, I disagree with you. Half of the people in the industry use drugs, and I'm just talking about the music industry. Bonnie Raitt battled alcoholism before she "cleaned herself up" (as she put it) and she was later nominated and won a Grammy for her comeback album. Natalie Cole battled drug addiction before she recovered and she was later nominated and won a Grammy for her comeback album, "Unforgettable". Carlos Santana battled drug addiction before he recovered and he was later nominated and won a Grammy for his comeback album.

I was shocked it even made it to number 1. clive has the strings to keep her songs in rotation so that the radio stations play them over and over and over and over and they grow on you, the same with taylor swift, though I like her ONE song. Grammy's is full of crap anyway but I agree that Whitney didn't deserve number one and doesn't deserve an award.

Ignorance can only have wings where intelligence is absent ...soulfr33 of blackvoices.com LOL! @
I actually have listened to Whitneys cd and I loved it . It's a very positive disk and if your listening with negative ears, you wont get it. It's sad that if a black female artist isn't singing booty songs and half naked, she's disrespected and overlooked. Let Whitney Houston air a live telivised concert on the same day as the lame ass Grammys (that I used to love) I guarantee you Ms. Houston will get the ratings. I WILL NOT BE WACTHING THE GRAMMYS THIS YEAR!

The fact.......that Ms Houston was rejected shines of the rejuvenation of racism that is the equalism of foul subjects which embark on the sinister creations of lost souls......therefore creating the separation of church and state......which is lost in the symbol of lost love.....and the reparations of the dislikes of happiness which is the mixture of collards and mustards.

Do you mean the Grammies...that show where they give you an award that's like a gold watch for old peeps that about to retire and never to be heard from again? Those Grammies? That boring show that you wonder why your even watching and you mind drifts to something else to do because its so awful to see these people out there imitating theirselves doing the same old boring thing over and over again? Those Grammies? Where you have to sit through some classical music that you only hear on elevators or country music that you didn't even know existed ...much less even care about? Pleeeeeze! That show needs Whitney Houston...even if its just to look at her...because she looks amazing! That was the only reason I would have even watched. Now I'm spared because now that boring azz show is going to be a very dull cornethon. It's like...look..you got your black president..be happy..no more bliss for ya'll! The Grammies? No Whitney?....zzzzzzzzzz...a sleeping Pill!!!!!

I can't speak for anyone else but when I heard the first song I didn't recognize her voice. My husband had to tell me that that was Whitney Houston. It did not sound like her at all. I didn't like it at all. Her voice sounded like a former shadow of itself. I think that Davis put her out there to soon. She should have take a little more time and regained her strength.

Who says Whitney or Kanye are supposed to get Grammy's just because they've put out good albums. There are plenty of great albums out every year that get snubbed. By better artists. Are you saying that the Grammy's are rigged and the same artists are supposed to get Grammy's every time they put out an album because Whitney and Kanye have consistently been nominated for the award with every release ?
It's obvious why Kanye has been snubbed and he deserves it. Why should he be rewarded for all his arrogant, obnoxious and bad behavior with music's highest honor? It's about time the industry sent him and other immature artists a message. Unsportsmanlike and un-role model-like conduct should never be rewarded.
I liked Whitney's album but her recent appearances haven't been stellar. She may have damaged herself with all her drug use. Again, this may be the industry taking a stand against immoral and irresponsible behavior from an artist they expected much more from. Hopefully she'll be able to mount a successful comeback.

Yeah, but Whitney was the Grammy's "Golden Child". They expected more from her. Shemade a public spectacle of herself over the last decade, appearing on tv specials high, sickly and emaciated and out of sorts. Then that reality show, consorting with known drug people and the public mudslinging. The pop public fell out of love with her. People pretty much know she's been propped up by Davis to try to save her career and his label. That kind of smacks of favoritism from a rich benefactor more than an artist who was able to get back on top on her own. She needs to disappear for a few more years, maybe work behind the scenes. Go back to the church and do some gospel. Mentor some kids. Work on her voice more. Stick to r&b and leave pop music alone for awhile. At least she knows black folks still love her. Raitt was hardly known by the general public before she won her Grammy. She was am almost-forgetten artist from the 70's who was more comfortable with blues than pop. Santana was a classic rock memory who hadn't been on the charts in decades or on the radio outside of classic rock stations. They're comebacks were considered almost miraculous. The same with Natalie Cole, plus she had a nice hook with her creatively recorded duet with her late father.

The difference between Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Natalie Cole and Whitney is that the first three women had circumstances in a different time and era and most of their issues were not well-known to the vast public with the exception of family, fans and the music industry and their issues did not derail their careers with vast gaps of non-performance and the wild azz drama the way that Whitney did. And to add another point, Whitney Houston's "real life, this is "who she really is" drama with Bobby Brown exposes her and all to see who she really is: a drug addict who decided (for money) to publically air all her odd behavior & dirty laundry along with supporting the transgressions of her often jailed husband and a train-wreck of a reality show that showed her true side and it unmasked what people were fed that Bobby was the reason why she failed at her career. The Whitney we saw on "Being Bobby Brown" was not an act, that who she is; Mrs. Ghetto and Clive Davis, as hard as he tried, could not pull the rabbit out of the hat for her and the Grammys knew that. Clive Davis takes raw talent and creates the star within the industry(as he did with Whitney) but technology (reality shows, blogs, internet, chats, text etc) and her actions (tryin' to blame Bobby for everything)has caught up with the industry and you cannot reinvent falling stars now the way you could have back in the day.
And going on Oprah and other talk shows, shedding tears did not help her cause since what we saw as the real Whitney could not be turned around and made believeable to the public.
Plus, Whitney's time is up just the same as Janet Jackson. Their stardom, popularity and maximum earning potentialascended in the dance/pop/disco era and that time has passed all of it's fans of that era have families and havemoved on and Whitney and Janet never re-invented themselves andtheir music to appeal to the younger generations in order to compete with the Beyonces', Alicia Keys', the Rehinna's and the like.
In todays' music, Whitney is a grandma and her fans are high middle-aged. Whitney has her run, won her Grammys early on inher careerand I hope that Whitney saved her money because she needs to perform on the secondary circuit (along with Anita Baker, Sade etc)or justretire.
Did Grammys Sleep On Whitney?
No they did not.

Whitney had the best voice of all contemporary female artists.True talent. I admire her recovery and I hope she succeeds but her voice has declined and she needs more time to get it to the right place where she can sing comfortably. That said,Whitney can still out-sing many females who would have been nominated.

The grammy's did not sleep on Whitney - you are correct - her time is up. Not because she is old, but her voice is not the same and probably will never be the same again. I am a Whitney fan, but listening to her live made me cringe. Her voice cracked and she didnt sing. She did a lot of "running" but none of the thunder inducing singing she did in her hey day. I am a singer and I know how difficult it is to maintain strong vocal stregnth if you smoke, drink, etc...Whitney abused her voice for many years and the payoff is that its gone....

I like your post and the psychology behind it.So if one can change their life can they change their destiny, can we turn evil around and if the sins of the parents fall on the child is that fair. Most people are in a poor mental health state and are not even aware ,which makes them amke wrong choices. Is whitneys time up or did she mess up.And if she made some mistakes and learned from her mistakes than is it really a mistake.
