Did Tyler Perry Kill TV for Black People?

Lately there has been a huge shift in current black television sit-coms. Basically, they don?t seem to exist anymore. What happened? I thought it might have just been me noticing this strange new phenomenon but when my kid brought it up I realized I wasn?t hallucinating. She used to watch the Disney Channel and mentioned that once ?That?s So Raven? ended there were no more Disney shows with a black cast. ?Corey in the House? lasted a minute but then that was gone. Now she feels they are ONLY catering to White kids. The result? she doesn?t watch the Disney Channel anymore. I noticed that same trend on other stations. Black TV shows appeared to be going the way of the Dodo bird. Now before you say? Oh here goes another Black person complaining about Hollywood, the system, or racism, or whatever? just do me one favor and list five (5) currently produced, in-season African American or urban based television shows. Take your time. I?ll wait. (Tick-Tock-Tick-Tock) Can?t do it? Can ya? Don?t feel bad. Neither could we. I only came up with three (four if you count Lincoln Heights on ABC Family) and two on this list are from Tyler Perry?s camp, but that?s it.

Now I am a big fan of Tyler Perry?s work, especially the Madea movies, and I admire what he?s been able to accomplish, but what I have noticed is that aside from the new show ?Brothers? on Fox, with Daryl Chill Mitchell & Michael Strahan, there are no African American based prime time shows other than House of Payne and Meet the Browns. However, there is a ton of everything else on the air. Have the television production Gods that sit on the mount of the ?Holly-Land? forsaken an entire market or are they putting the pimp hand down as a message to all those who may even think about doing an end run around the Hollywood machine and taking the Tyler Perry route to get theirs. Is it Haterism? Is it punishment to the black production industry because one slave got free? Or? is it something completely different?

Now don?t get me wrong. There are still black people in TV shows and movies, but what happened to Black TV? No... not Negrovision. I?m talking about Black shows White people were watching too. From the mid 80?s through maybe a year ago we held a lot of program slots, both current and in syn***ation. Now it seems we?re mainly in syn***ation and even that?s dwindling. Let?s take a quick look back:

TV Then: The Cosby Show, In Living Color, A Different World, Family Matters, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Jamie Foxx Show, In The House (LL Cool J), The Hughley?s, Eve, Showtime at the Apollo, The Steve Harvey Show, Moesha, The Parkers, Sister-Sister, Smart Guy, Living Single, Half & Half, One on One, All of Us, NY Undercover, Girlfriends, Soul Food, Roc, The Wayans Brothers, Malcolm & Eddie, My Wife & Kids, Everybody Hates
Chris, That?s so Raven, Corey in the House, Just Jordan, The Game, etc.

TV Now: Tyler Perry?s House of Payne, Tyler Perry?s Meet the Browns, Brothers, and Lincoln Heights.

Sad! Just Sad!!!

And before any of you say? ?Why is he blaming Tyler Perry?? I?m not. I?m just noting the strange coincidence in the timing between TP?s coming to power, which was done outside of the Hollywood grip and the recent TV show abandonment by the powers that be, of a market that has been consistently on fire for over the last 20 years. But as I said earlier, what if it isn?t the God?s on the mount of the ?Holly-Land?. What if it?s us? Have we
changed, as viewers? as writers? as producers? I don?t know but America as a whole has gone through a generational shift. I?m in my 30?s and we grew up with a completely different view of life, sets of values, and we actually gave a damn about something.

Keeping it real was more than just a catch phrase. It was reflected in our music, our TV shows, and in our lifestyle, Black, White, Latino, and otherwise. This new ?Sugar Rush?
generation is growing up heavy on adrenaline. Just take a random kids show or cartoon, for example. It?s all sizzle and no steak. No lessons. No real messages. And most are actually not funny. The characters are always angry, always screaming, and they all have attitudes but no personality. Is this what the public wants? Is this the memo that Hollywood is getting? Is this mindset part of the demise of Black TV programming? I?m still looking for the answer, but like being at a restaurant, if this isn?t what I ordered, I?m sending it back.

Yes. Tyler Perry did kill Black T.V. and I can prove it.

Whites and latinos have come together and have created Hee Haw in spanish, as a backlash.....

You should write Hollywood to find out. You have made one good argument.
And that is my 2 cents!

No Tyler Perry did not "Kill Black TV".Black and white sitcoms have changed drastically from the 80s. Everything is aboutsex now and thatsall Hollywood wants to show. All of the teen dramas are hyped with sex and non of it is worth watching..imo.
True, in the 80s almost all sitcoms ended with a positive message and left you with something to think about, but those days appear to be over, in Hollywood at least.
Iliked the Tyler Perry plays. They were inspiration to me ata time whenI truly needed to laugh.I admit I didn't like the tv shows at first. I just began watching them recently and they have gotten better andtheyhave messages in themlike the old sitcoms. Iwatc*** an episode the other day when the little boy was chatting online to someone he thoughtwas a little girl but it ended up being a child molester. It reminded me ofDifferent Strokes and themessages they had at theend of an episode.
Maybeblack people should forget about Hollywood and venture out like Tyler Perry did. Least his shows are clean and family friendly. He has nothing to do with the canceling of those other shows. I like Everybody Hates Chris, great storylines, enjoy seeing actors from back in the day, etc., but maybe if the producers had left Hollywood alone and ventured out as Tyler Perry did they would still be on the air.I thinkHollywood is only concerned with catering to their white audiences .

I agree. Hollywood does appear to only care now about pushing sex to teens. The moral aspects in tv programming have basically disappeared. Like I said, I'm not blaming Tyler Perry in this post. I was just making a comparison of how, as soon as one of us went around the system successfully all other black programming just died out. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

I agree that black tv shows are slowly fading away and Tyler Perry has aided in the demise on black tv. The black tv shows that are still around are a joke. Lincoln Heights iscorny as hell, and the Tyler Perry shows are terrible, they are not funny at all, nor are they the slightest bit entertaining. The black shows that are on air are unrealistic and draw a poor picture of black people.

The death of Black TV and Black radio began when we let the White establishment tell us who we are. They told us that we are not Black but "Urban" and we went along with that. Black music is in trouble too. When a White singer like Josh Stone is referred to as a Soul singer and Erikah Badu is referred too as a "Neo-Soul" singer you know that we are in trouble. This "Urban" thing has finally hit us and now we have to get back to being Black in order to have Black TV shows and music once more.

Tyler Perry did not kill black t.v. but you do make a good point.Don't drink the hatoraid it's bad for your health.Do you understand the good quality of of he puts out.Not to mention the amount of black and spanish people he has working for him.He gives older actors and actresses work that don't get these offers from the whiter tv and movie world. So why don't u complainers head over to the white tv people and find out why they don'tsupport black tv instead of hating on someone who is accutally reaching back to pull some of us over.

Tyler Perry did not kill Black TV. Before he came on the scene, black shows and sitcoms were decreasing. It's not his fault that black shows are not as prevalent as it was in the 90s.Blame it on the "Powers that Be" The big wigs that own the production company. They're the ones who don't buy black shows. And I love Lincoln Heights it's like the only black drama on TV. And what happened to The Game it is a very good show.

No, Tyler Perry did not kill Black TV. It was dying a slow death even before he came on the scene. There are several factors contributing to the current dearth of African American themed TV shows but one that sticks out to me is the lack of other's following Tyler Perry's example. We are still looking to others (i.e. white run Hollywood) to produce entertainment for us. Case in point-the big deal that folks are making over Disney's decision to make an animated movie featuring its first Black princess (without a black prince mind you). We need to tell our own stories! There's a plethora of Black creative talent out there both famous andnot so famousthat would bemore than capable of producing quality entertainment that would hold true to the African American cultural experience. And yes, the financial capital does exist among our people to back such endeavors. You can say what you want about Perry, but until more of our people decide to take a page from his playbook, we can look forward to seeing even fewer Black TV shows in the near future.

What has killed Black TV, is what has been slowly killing the rest of TV as well, and that is the onslaught of Reality TV over the past decade. Sitcoms in general are becoming at thing of the past. Today you have Reality shows such as:

American Idol
America's Got Talent
So you think you can dance
Wife swap, Extreme Makeover
The Bachelor, The Bachelorette;
Deal or No Deal, Survivor, Fear Factor, Celebrity Fit Club, the Biggest Loser, Flavor of Love, Real Housewives, Real Chance of Love; The Apprentice, Diddy's show.
The List goes on and on and on.

Now none of those shows individually has any global appeal to African Americans. But together as a group (and there's many more than what I've listed), they have fragmented the African American viewing audience.

Even if a good black sitcom were to come on the air, so few of us as a group would even be watching it, that ratings wouldn't justify the networks keeping it on the air. (white folks surely won't be watching it). But it's not just black shows that are struggling to stay on television. With Cable TV being a mainstay in most households, there are just an insane amount of TV viewing options at EVERYBODY's disposal.

Nobody, or one entity is the cause of this. TV has changed.

Our only hope at the moment for quality black programming is TVONE, and what hopefully will be the continued resurrection of BET. But even those stations are woefully behind the eight-ball in getting new quality black programming on the air.

What killed black TV was our inability to maintain our culture (with all it's diversity) AND introduce a way of incorportating a relatable script that would also appeal to other cultures.

I never really looked at it that way. I will say that you see more shows with one or two black cast members than entire casts. There IS the show on Nickelodeon that Keke Palmer stars in but, from what I can recall, she's the only Black cast member, but the show is based on her.
ALL the shows that I watch now are reruns from the TV then list, some of them my all-time favorites. I do not see anything like those shows being reproduced. Not in the near future, not ever really. I just watch them and feel real nostalgic and sad that they ended and that we won't see anything new like that.

No, Tyler Perry did not kill blacktv. FOX, NBC, ABC,CBS, AND THE CW killed blacktv. If it wasn't for Tyler Perry to give us something to enjoy on tbs we wouldn't have anything to watch. Now when nbc was having success and high ratings w/ The cosby show and a different world and fox was the black network that we all enjoyed back in the 90's and then all of a sudden they didn't want black tv because they wanted to go back to white tv now your complaining because Tyler Perry step up to give us one night to laugh the way we like to laugh. We the people should stop complaining and say thank you Tyler Perry for caring about us to put not one but two sitcoms out their because the other networks won't.

I thought I was the only one that felt that way about our new and upcoming generation of black America. Things that they do today we would have never said out loud, maybe thought it.. we would not have done it...because we were to afraid of what our parent would do to us. This generation of youth have no fear of anything at all. I'm only in my thirty's and I still don't curse in front of my elders and it make me feel awkward when others do it. Even the R&B songs aren't about being in love anymore just straight to the point, lets Cutt and that's all. I worry about my child growing up in this day of time all the time..Every thing you said was perfect I would not change a word. I pray that they get back to respecting their selves and what they parents or grandparents might think about the path they are headed down. My Grandmother biggest seem like favorite thing to say was "You better not be out there embarrissing me out their in them streets..."Every time I got ready to do something I thought might get back to her I wouldn't do it and it keep me out of a lot of trouble too..and I didn't have my child until my late twenty's I enjoyed being young...and kid free!I enjoyed watching black family shows like the Cosby's..

the author of this piece, "Ian Cogneto," brings out thought-provoking issues about "Black" TV. why do we seem to blame each other for failures in our community? a lot of factors came together to contribute to the loss of "black" tv. NO, Tyler Perry did not "kill" "black" tv. we never were REALLY a QUALITY RECURRING part of Holly-folly. i have always said we must stop seeing ourselves as court jesters, slave comics and produce drama as other ethnics do..we need to produce programs that are not sit-coms, but serious drama. we are not always laughing and clowning in reality, so when will someone have the courage to produce serious weekly shows? i know it's easier said than done, but that's the problem and has been since we have finally 'made it' by using comedy to 'get in.' now that we are 'in,' we need serious weekly shows that compare to shows other groups have currently. this Tyler Perry can do--and do well. let's stop making "massuh" laugh and produce slices of the courage, faith and seriousness of "black" life. "black" drama is past due folks. stop clowning and reflect our true daily dilemmas. our progeny deserve to see a reflection of who we are really. "no mo' shackles for me."

I think Mr Perry is very good and thank God for a person to have stepped out and given to the community very nice Tyler thank you but Your New Show makes me very sad in deed. You have portrayed Black people as to being dumb assess and the show is very hard to watch we are not Circus clowns we also do not all sound the way the Browns sound honestly I think You should pull that stupid show off of the Air. it is not fun to watch black people act like monkeys. the Father who cannot speak right and the over weight son who is no smarted than his dog. I am very tired of shows that portray black people as ignorant fools that went out a long time ago with Fred Sanford in Sanford & Son. You need to read what people are saying and do something about it.
the Spanish have joined and deliver a nice show with humor and intelligent why cant we do the same society has looked down on us long enough and I for one am unsatisfied with what most shows that portray black people are un happy. revamp or remove the stupid show pleases and work on a few new concepts and give us a break in trying to be funny you know stupidity is good for 1 or 2 seconds but over 5 or 10 minutes is foolish and ridiculous. even Media are far more inelegant than the Browns and I think you have missed the point and have degreased in your production and your values. please remove the ignorant stigma you have revamped upon your characters in this show. actually just get ride of it they are not funny but disgraceful with only a handful of humorous giggles then turn into a bunch of fools laughing about dumb things. not cool.

No, I don't believe Mr. Perry killed Black sitcoms, but being a Black man dressing up as a Black woman was funny for a minute, and that was back when Mr. Flip Wilson did it. I find Mr. Perry'ssitcom does not appeal tothis man with an advanced degree on any level. I don't know of one Blackperson or familyassilly & dimwitted as portrayed by the Browns or the Paynes.Someone please bring back education oriented Black sitcoms, stat.

I like what you said and have pointed out. honestly I have seen a decline in even successful marriages in Black people and mixed races blacks being portrait in everything as being the most violent and as fare as up to being the most unlearned people on the face of the earth. which are not true at all .we have a black president and we lead in the military and many other courts and government positions we need to point this out and make it a point to show the good and intellectual side of the American Black people. we need to strive for perfection and teach our children and show the world who we really are leaders and champions not dumb @ssess. and murderers. May God have the mercy on us. the US. we also lead in sports in every division not perfect but we are there.
