Information is still developing, but
Alaina Reed Hall passed away today at the age of sixty-three. The cause
of her death has not yet been officially reported but the actress, best
known for her roles as Rose Holloway on 227 and Olivia on Sesame Street ,
has been very public about her ongoing battle with breast cancer. She
participated in the documentary ?Breast Cancer Examined: An
African-American Perspective,? to commemorate 2009 National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month and share her courageous approach to fighting
the disease.

Born Bernice Ruth Reed in Ohio, Alaina
Reed began her career in early 70s theater, appearing in Broadway and
Off-Broadway productions such as Chicago , Hair, and Eubie . In 1976 she landed the role of Sesame Street ?s
Olivia. From then until 1988 Reed presented children with one of the
earliest depictions of positive black womanhood, demonstrated the
warmth of adult sibling relationships with her brother Gordon, and
straight up taught us letters and how to count . In 1985 Reed joined the original cast of 227 as
Rose Lee, one of my favorite black sitcom characters ever. Rose was
sassy but sensitive, responsible but mischievous, and always good for
showcasing Reed?s excellent singing voice through some wacky plot
device like a church choir solo or random sing-off that would somehow
keep everyone in the buidling from being evicted.

Kevin Peter Hall (the 7'2? actor who portrayed Harry in Harry and The Hendersons and Predator in the movies of the same name) guest starred as Rose?s love interest on 227 and
in 1988 the two began a real-life relationship, marrying both on the
show and in real life. Sadly, he passed away in 1991 from complications
of AIDS contracted through a blood transfusion. 227 was canceled that same year but the now Alaina Reed Hall continued to act until her death, steadily appearing on sitcoms such as A Different World , Friends , Ally McBeal , and making the best of a recurring role on the short-lived series Cleghorne . She also returned to her theater roots with a one-woman show, ?Alaina at the Bijou.?

Alaina was an old friend and I was blessed to be in her show at the Bijou in New York back in the late 70's. I know that she is with the Lord now. No more pain and sorrow, only Joywith Jesus Christ, the King of Glory. My prayers go out to her children, Andre and Tanya Cooke and her grandchildren. Dear God, comfort them in their sorrow. Alaina was a complicated and talented woman. I will miss her. I regret that I did not get to see her before the end of her life here on earth. She will be missed.

Alaina Reed Hall (November 10, 1946?December 17, 2009[1] ) was an American actress best known for her roles as Olivia, Gordon's kid sister, on the long-running children's television series Sesame Street , and Rose Lee Holloway on the NBC sitcom 227 .

Career
Born in Springfield, Ohio , Hall began her career in Broadway and off-Broadway productions. She was among the original cast members in the 1974 off-Broadway production of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road . Hall also appeared in productions of Hair , Chicago , and Eubie! .[2]

In 1976, Hall won the role of Olivia on the children's series Sesame Street . Her character was a photographer and kid sister of Gordon. In 1985, Hall co-starred on the sitcom 227 , frequently traveling between New York (where Sesame Street is taped) and Los Angeles (where 227 was taped). Due to this frantic schedule, she left Sesame Street in 1988.

After 227 ended in 1990, Hall appeared in guest roles on various television series including Herman's Head and Blossom . She also provided the voice for the animated characters on Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? and Sonic the Hedgehog . In 1995, Hall co-starred on the short-lived WB sitcom Cleghorne! , starring Ellen Cleghorne . The following year she appeared in the television film The Cherokee Kid . She has since had recurring roles on Ally McBeal , Any Day Now , and ER .

In addition to stage and television work, Hall has also appeared in several films including Death Becomes Her (1992), opposite Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep , Cruel Intentions (1999), and the 2007 independent feature I'm Through with White Girls (The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks) .

edit[] Personal life
Hall was married twice. Her first marriage, which produced two children, ended in divorce. In December 1988, she married actor Kevin Peter Hall after meeting him when he guest starred on 227 .[3] She was widowed in 1991 after her husband died of pneumonia-related complications after contracting AIDS .[4][5]

I bumped to her on Fairfax here in LA some years back. She said hi but didn't seem happy. Might have been feeling pain back then.

I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I LOVED her on 227 (she was my favorite next to Regina King) and on Sesame Street. I almost forgot that she was on Sesame Street. It would be nice if Sesame Street would do some type of tribute to her for all of her years on that show, but most of the kids now wouldn't know who she was anyway. RIP-You'll truly be missed

It was while watching the Golden Globe Awards that I realized that Ms. Reed-Hall had passed. I was suddenly so sad. I remembered when her husband died of AIDS and I remembered her sweet smile and the energy she brought to any work she did. What a beautiful person she was and we will remember her with great love.
